“Yes, Boss! I am coming. I’ll bring my laptop, too.”

“Wait, before we go down, I’m putting all thirteen phones into the room safe.”

After the phones were safely locked away, we went downstairs and filled our plates. There was one vacant table in the corner where we sat and went to work both on the food and on the info.

I opened my laptop, clicked on Rudy’s email, and began reading:

The Amazon Foundation. This organization was founded in February of 2016 with the goal of “contributing to the development and growth of sustainable social and educational projects in Brazil.” Essentially, the Foundation provides various forms of support to grassroots initiatives working to advance education and improve social welfare to the indigenous Amazonian peoples. The Foundation’s main area of operation is the Amazon rainforest, which is currently home to over 900,000 indigenous peoples who believe they are in a fight for their very survival. The Foundation serves strictly these Amazonian tribes. The Foundation is also in the process of buying certain portions of Amazonian jungle so that the Brazilian government can stop deforesting the jungle.

I had to admit I admired the professor’s ambitions to help the Amazonian peoples. There certainly are not many good Samaritans left in this world. But the cryptocurrency scenario wasn’t adding up. According to what Rudy had uncovered, Professor Zambear had started his fundraising while teaching at Bakersfield University in California. That would account for the 918 million that had been transferred in early 2016. He then left California and began his teaching career at Kingsley in the fall of 2016.

From the fall of 2016 to the spring of 2019, he or his accomplice, who I’m assuming was Khole Rivers, hacked and stole over four billion in cryptocurrency. But why hadn’t any of those funds been transferred to his shell businesses in Brazil? Why was it still sitting in the iPhones? And why Russians? Where did these Russians get the vast amounts of currency that were hacked? Why hadn’t any of them reported the losses? The only plausible answer to that was they’d obtained it illegally themselves.

Were they connected to the killer? My first thought would be if it was illegally obtained, the Russian mafia stepped in to do recovery, taking out both Professor Zambear and Khole Rivers. But then I wondered if somehow the gender professor fit into this puzzle.

The one thing I knew for sure was if it was the Russian mafia, I would terminate my contract and services to Mr. Kingsley immediately. No way in hell was I going to tackle them.

Back from breakfast, I gathered my thoughts, made some notes, and dialed Counselor Bingham. It turned into a lengthy conversation. I went over all the information slowly as he wrote down everything I told him. We discussed my analysis and he agreed with my thinking, advising me to call Counselor Kowkosvki and update him as well.

When I hung up with Counselor Bingham, my phone pinged with an incoming message. The mechanic at the Honda dealer in Mobile texted with an update on Rudy’s car.
